Looking for a Nielsen like rating for websites? The closest thing out there is currently the Alexa toolbar. Think of it as a Nielson rating for the popularity of the website you are visiting.

It works on a similar principle to that of the Nielson rating. It uses a small sampling of people's surfing habits to determine the popularity of a given website.

The higher the Alexa number, the more popular the website is. Thus an Alexa number of "1" would mean the website is ranked the NUMBER ONE site in the world (Currently held by yahoo.com), receiving the largest number of sampled viewers.

It has to be noted, since the Alexa toolbar is only available on Internet Explorer for Windows it skews the results for websites that are of a different operating system (i.e. www.apple.com). Also the sampling is NOT a truly random sampling of users, people who donwload the toolbar get it for reasons that benefit themselves, for myself I always find it useful to know relatively how popular a given website is. You won't believe how many professionally designed websites are languishing in their own little ghost towns (An Alexa ranking in the millions).

eLouai current rank at around 20,000. Thus we are the 20,000th most popular website in the world. How does that translate into real numbers? Well for this website we get an average pageview of around 2.5 pages per visitor, and around 18,000 - 25,000 unique visitors a day. When we ranked around 80,000 on Alexa we were getting around 3,000 - 6,000 unique visitors a day
